502nd Air Base Wing Public Affairs

The 2023 San Antonio Rock 'n' Roll Marathon will come through Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston between 7-11 a.m. Dec. 3. Residents should expect traffic delays and drivers need to watch for runners.

The running course includes the Harry Wurzbach West Gate, Stanley Road, Staff Post Road (between Quarters #10-#15), and through the Quadrangle. Road closures and detours are expected, so plan accordingly.

If you are a resident or plan to be on JBSA-Fort Sam Houston on Dec. 3, please prepare for traffic stops and possible delays, and remember to drive cautiously. JBSA Security Forces will be on hand to guide traffic flow. In case of emergencies, trust our Security Forces personnel to direct you appropriately.

After the runners have left the installation, a cleaning crew will be hard at work until approximately noon.

Two gates will be opened for outbound traffic only, New Braunfels West (right off Dickman Road)  and Gorgas Circle/Burr Gate (near 470th Military Intelligence Brigade, building 1070).

Scott Gate (next to Harry Wurzbach East) will be open to inbound traffic only.

Security Forces will help facilitate traffic flow through the marathon course. Expect traffic control points at these locations:

  • Gorgas Circle,
  • Stanley Road and Harry Wurzbach Road,
  • Schofield Road and Stanley Road,
  • N. New Braunfels Avenue and Stanley Road,
  • Soapsuds Row and Stanley Road.

Please also be prepared for live music starting as early as 6 a.m. Cole High School will perform across from the old BAMC building at 10 a.m., and Fort Sam Houston's Own Army Band will perform inside the Quadrangle throughout the day. Spectators can park at buildings 40, 247, 128, 2250, 2270, 367, 325, 2373, 2791, 2841, and 368.
