By 59th Medical Wing Public Affairs 59th Medical Wing Public Affairs

The Air Force and Joint Base San Antonio celebrate the 54th anniversary of the Biomedical Science Corps by designating the week of Jan. 28 through Feb. 1 as BSC Appreciation Week.  This week is intended to honor the heritage of the BSC while recognizing the achievements and continuing efforts of the men and women who comprise the corps.

The BSC’s historical footprints date back to 1917 when the Army Sanitary Corps was established to combat infectious diseases.  Three years later, the Army Medical Administrative Corps followed.  In 1949, the Air Force Medical Service was officially established and then in 1965, the BSC was created and has continued to thrive.

The BSC mission is to provide full-spectrum Allied Health support to optimize the health and readiness of all we serve.  The BSC motto is “Proud to be … BSC."

The BSC is the most diverse corps within the Air Force Medical Service, consisting of 15 distinct specialties which include: Aerospace Physiology, Audiology, Bioenvironmental Engineering, Biomedical Scientists, Clinical Psychology, Clinical Social Work, Dietetics, Laboratory, Optometry, Occupational Therapy, Pharmacy, Physical Therapy, Physician Assistant, Podiatry and Public Health.

These healthcare professionals are imbedded in nearly every medical unit to provide professional clinical expertise as well as expert administrative knowledge.  They are utilized as specialists in the field, boots on the ground, doing direct care for our warriors and their families.  They are also leading organizations in key positions, vectoring our troops, developing leaders, providing innovation to the AFMS, and overall, supporting the Air Force mission.
