Brooke Army Medical Center deploys HIPAA-compliant secure messaging app

Medical professionals at Brooke Army Medical Center at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston have deployed a cloud-based messaging app which will allow them to securely share patient information from their personal devices and desktop workstations

The app, which is Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act compliant, can be installed directly to users’ personal smartphones, eliminating the need for additional devices provided at a cost to BAMC.

Even more significant than the monetary savings from eliminating extraneous devices, is the amount of time staff members will save by using the app.

“Time is your biggest saving,” said BAMC wireless engineer Patti Steward.

According to Maj. Walter Walsh, chief technology officer, the app will enable users to exchange medical photos, which can be taken and shared directly from the app without being stored on the user’s personal device.

Additionally, the app can be used for live video chat, allowing medical professionals to consult from a distance, saving valuable time.

“We hope it works well enough that it becomes the enterprise solution,” Walsh said.
