59th Medical Wing sets Air Force work station upgrade bar

By Senior Airman Keifer Bowes 59th Medical Wing Public Affairs

The 59th Medical Wing, headquartered at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, migrated a record number of computers from relic operating systems to a new version, from the end of January through the first of March 2018.

Efforts chartered by the 59th MDW’s systems team enabled the roughly 8,000-member wing to meet the Air Force information technology requirement ahead of schedule.

“The migration brought us into compliance with the Department of Defense directive to upgrade operating systems to meet security requirements,” said Thomas Martinez, chief technology officer for the 59th MDW. “From the aspect of keeping our patient data secure, the move was critical to preventing security breaches.”

The 59th MDW is dedicated to exemplary patient-centered health care with a clear focus on patient safety, ready access and customer service. The organization prides itself in finding new ways to enhance the patient experience through process improvement and innovation.

With various treatment facilities throughout the city, the 59th MDW provides a full spectrum of health care services to more than 240,000 beneficiaries in the San Antonio metropolitan area.

In support of such a large mission, the team upgraded computer systems around the clock and on a floor-by-floor basis, following both Air Force network and Defense Health Agency requirements.

“This was quite the accomplishment, given that we started only four weeks ago and were able beat units significantly smaller than us,” Martinez said. “We exceeded the DOD’s deadline by over a month, and upgraded more than 3,700 machines, the most out of any facility in the Air Force.”
