JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-FORT SAM HOUSTON, Texas –
Brooke Army Medical Center at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston is providing medical care to evacuees of Hurricane Harvey, which triggered devastating flooding across southeastern Texas and displaced thousands of residents.
BAMC has received a total of 10 patients. Six remain hospitalized. Three were treated and released and one was transferred upon request to be closer to family.
“Our hearts go out to every family who has been affected by this natural disaster,” said BAMC Commander Brig. Gen. Jeffrey Johnson. “We are humbled and proud to do our part in this time of need.”
The State of Texas requested and received permission from the Department of Defense for BAMC to treat civilian patients affected by the natural disaster.
This support will not interrupt BAMC’s mission as one of two Level 1 Trauma Centers within San Antonio, and the sole Level I center within the Department of Defense.
BAMC stands ready to aid the community, Johnson said.
“We have a long and close relationship with the first responders of San Antonio, the surrounding 22 counties and the Southwest Texas Regional Advisory Council when it comes to trauma and healthcare,” Johnson said. “We are more than ready to aid displaced residents who need immediate medical attention.”
