502nd Force Support Squadron captures Air Force-best trifecta

By Robert Goetz 502nd Air Base Wing Public Affairs

Winning an Air Force-level award is a high achievement for any individual or unit, but for an organization to attain three such honors in the same year is an extra special feat.

The 502nd Force Support Squadron at Joint Base San Antonio achieved that trifecta when its bowling, community center and information, tickets and travel programs were selected as “Best in the Air Force” for fiscal year 2016.

“This is an exciting year for the 502nd FSS,” said Terrye Heagerty, 502nd FSS director. “To have three Air Force best program winners is huge. All three programs contribute to the awesome quality of life we have in JBSA. All three programs support our diverse population of students, permanent party, retirees and family members.”

Heagerty attributed the squadron’s success to its team members.

“The 502nd FSS has so many professionals across JBSA and it makes me so proud to see them earn this level of recognition for their dedication to our military, civilians and family members,” she said. “It was well-deserved.”

JBSA bowling program leaders acknowledged the contributions of their 35 staff members at the JBSA-Fort Sam Houston, JBSA-Lackland and JBSA-Randolph bowling centers.

“Our entire 502nd FSS leadership and myself are proud our bowling program is recognized as the best program because we know just how hard they all work to provide such a wonderful program for our military communities,” said Bonnie Masapollo, 502nd FSS assistant flight chief for bowling and golf. “These three bowling centers and their teams work hard and they don’t just work hard for their location. They work hard in being successful for Joint Base San Antonio. They are an amazing team.”

JBSA’s community centers – Arnold Hall and Skylark at JBSA-Lackland and Sam Houston Community Center and the Student Activity Center at JBSA-Fort Sam Houston – serve a diverse customer base, with a large majority being technical training students, Heagerty said.

“These students are looking for a place to go to relax after a long day of classroom and field training,” she said. “They could just go back to their dorms, but it’s awesome to know they prefer to visit our facilities that cater to their needs.”

The community centers also provide organizations across JBSA with a place for meetings, commander’s calls and social events, Heagerty said.

The ITT offices provide the JBSA community with an array of discounted tickets to theme parks, water parks, sporting events, festival and theatrical performances in San Antonio and throughout Texas and the United States.

Chaney Ferguson, 502nd FSS assistant flight chief for community services, attributed ITT’s award to employees’ “hard work, dedication and the love of taking care of all of our customers.”

“We take pride in ourselves having the best programs, tickets and personnel in the business,” he said. “Our customers come back time and time again because they know we will take care of them and meet their needs 100 percent of the time with a smile.”
