JBSA Libraries Need Volunteers for 2017 Summer Reading Program

By 2nd Lt. Matthew Jeffers 502d Air Base Wing Public Affairs

With the last days of school fast approaching and the next school year seeming so far away, many families are now asking themselves: “Is there anything we can do to help our kids stay engaged with reading and learning over the summer break?”

The 2017 Summer Reading Program was designed for that very reason!

Wednesdays this summer, children of all ages participating in the Summer Reading Program can win prizes, meet animals, and team up to build forts, all while staying an active reader, logging reading minutes, and having family-friendly fun. These activities are happening across Joint Base San Antonio at the base libraries.

The Summer Reading Program is Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics based and Department of Defense approved. This year’s theme is “Reading by Design,” with an emphasis on teamwork, building, and hands-on projects.

The goal of the Summer Reading Program is to help kids avoid the “summer slide,” the loss of knowledge children face over the summer break. Children who participate in the Summer Reading Program will read at least six books over the summer. Those same children have also been shown to score higher in reading and math when they return to school.

JBSA Libraries need volunteers to help with crafts, activities, projects, and checking people in. Anyone can register to volunteer. The link for Registration goes live at www.jbsalibraries.org on May 20.

Summer Reading Program events will take place every Wednesday at 10 a.m. starting June 7 (except on July 5, due to Independence Day holiday).
