Hundreds of military kids and parents attended the Blue Star Families Books on Bases event the Military & Family Readiness Center at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston May 6, coordinated with support from The Walt Disney Company and featuring a surprise appearance from Mickey Mouse himself.

During the event, Blue Star Families volunteers and Disney VoluntEARS engaged the kids and their families in art and music activities. Brig. Gen. Heather L. Pringle, commander, 502nd Air Base Wing and Joint Base San Antonio, read “Tommy Can’t Stop!” by Tim Federle to the children.

Following the book reading, laughter filled the air when Mickey Mouse walked into the room. Each guest was able to personally meet the famous mouse and gather round for photos.

Every child went home with a reusable Blue Star Families tote bag full of read-along stories from Disney Publishing Worldwide and other gifts.

Blue Star Families is a national nonprofit/which supports, connects, and empowers military families through research and programming. Created in 2009, the Books on Bases program offers military kids a sense of community through the magic of reading.
