JBSA-Fort Sam Houston’s oldest Army federal employee retires at the age of 93

By Valerie Evering U.S. Army Signal Network Enterprise Center

Fred Chapal is a 93-year-old supply technician at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston and possibly one of the oldest civilians on duty. He is assigned to the U.S. Army Signal Network Enterprise Center, or NEC, working in the Business Division, Business Operation Branch, Logistical Section.

Employees at the NEC said goodbye to Chapal Thursday at his retirement. Though many questioned his decision to remain on duty, his strength and determination kept him around longer than anyone expected.

Chapal is a World War II veteran who served more than 30 years in federal service.  He is a man of few words that leaves a lasting impression. As the day draws closer, it’s time to bid farewell to a man who has served his country for decades.  As one of the oldest civil servants, he finally decided the time has come to put it all aside and spend quality time with his family.

While one might take his position as a supply technician for granted, Chapal’s dedication and passion has made a significant impact to the NEC. His zest for duty, eagerness to excel and desire to live a healthy lifestyle by remaining physically fit shows age is nothing but a number.

His coworkers have stated that Chapal’s constant optimism, enthusiasm and willingness to help will be greatly missed by the NEC and the 106th Signal Brigade employees and staff. The NEC wishes Chapal and his family all the blessings and happiness life brings.
