San Antonio Traffic Alert: I-35 closure April 7-10

By 502 Air Base Wing Public Affairs

Interstate 35 will be closed April 7-10 due to the demolition of a bridge near the northeast loop 410 for four days.

Starting at 9 p.m. Friday, all lanes between Rittiman Road and George Beach Avenue will be closed until Monday at 5 a.m. However it will re-open between 6 - 11 p.m. for Saturday's Spurs game traffic.

Drivers and hazmat trucks heading south on I-35 will have to exit onto George Beach Avenue and re-enter the highway at the next available ramp.

Those headed north on I-35 will be sent to the northbound 410 exit, to turn around at Binz-Engleman and continue on 410 before getting back on northbound I-35.

The bridge is being demolished to relocate the exit ramp from the left-hand side of the road to the right. The left-hand exit poses a danger because it forces tractor-trailers to cross over four lanes of traffic within a quarter-mile, which in-turn can bog down traffic and cause crashes.

The exit ramp on the right side of the highway was finished two years ago.
