By Capt. Rayvon Stanley Company C, 232nd Medical Battalion

Soldiers from 232nd Medical Battalion’s Company C at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston are volunteering with the Texas Ramp Project one Saturday morning each month to a build wheelchair ramps for needy recipients.

The Texas Ramp Project is a non-profit organization that provides an opportunity for volunteers to build ramps from the ground up for members of the community who are unable to efficiently enter and exit their homes due to current floor plans that limit freedom of movement. Many disabled and elderly people want to stay in their homes, but face the challenge of entering and exiting steps.

Since incorporating in 2006, the Texas Ramp Project has built more than 12,717 safe and durable ramps across Texas. Ramps are funded through donations and provided at no cost.

Recipients are referred by health care providers and social workers. Priority is given to clients from hospice facilities, dialysis patients and those who are living alone and are unable to exit their home.
