FALLS CHURCH, Va. - While overall heat illness rates for service members saw a slight decrease in 2025, the most severe form, heat stroke, has increased for the second consecutive year. Defense Health Agency-Public Health experts report that service members under 20 and recruit trainees are at exceptionally high risk. For example, a recruit is nearly 15 times more likely to suffer from heat exhaustion than other enlisted members. (Defense Health Agency-Public Health graphic illustration by Rachel Stershic)
