Berlin Airlift

Ramstein Air Base, Germany - In the interest of maximizing cargo space on Berlin Airlift aircraft, flying bags of flour into the city was an example of mission efficiency, but not without its risks as flour can be highly flammable when dispersed in the air. The Berlin Airlift flew more than 640 tons of flour into the city every day during the mission – enough to make 1.4 million loaves of bread every day. (USAF photo)
