Dr. Luis Martinez, Naval Medical Research Unit San Antonio Craniofacial Health and Restorative Medicine Directorate research microbiologist, holds a handheld Raman spectrometer that is being utilized for a research project at the NAMRU-SA focused on the development of diagnostic platforms that can better identify bacterial pathogens in wounded service members. The handheld spectrometer is often used in the lab to further miniaturize and assess the field-readiness of the platforms under investigation as well as to establish detection limits and classification capabilities for bacteria recovered from biological specimens.
