Eric Botts, Naval Medical Research Unit San Antonio senior laboratory technician, performs trace metal analysis on effluent samples that have been filtered by an amalgam separator to determine how much copper, tin, silver and mercury are being released into the wastewater system. Results from the testing help to determine how effective an amalgam separator is in filtering out dental waste and what can be done to improve the solids retention efficiency of amalgam separator. The amalgam separator is a cylindrical device attached to a dental chair that filters and removes amalgam particulate waste from wastewater. Amalgam, which contains a mixture of metals including mercury, is used by dentists for large teeth restorations and to fill in cavities.
