Dr. Dorian Olivera, Naval Medical Research Unit San Antonio Environmental Surveillance Department research toxicologist and principal investigator, describes the standardized test method for amalgam separator performance evaluation and how new, smaller separators are being developed. Olivera is part of a team of NAMRU-SA researchers who are involved in a project to develop a better prototype of the amalgam separator, a cylindrical device attached to a dental chair that filters and removes amalgam particulate waste from wastewater. Amalgam, which contains a mixture of metals including mercury, is used by dentists for large teeth restorations and to fill in cavities.
