Maj. Gen. Garrett Harencak (right) and Master
Sgt. Kimberly Williams unveil a mural showcasing
Airman 1st Class Joel C. Loftis in a building dedication
ceremony Oct. 20 at the Air Force Recruiting
Service headquarters. Building 491 on Joint Base
San Antonio-Randolph was previously a dormitory
named Loftis Hall after the Airman who was killed
during an attack at Rhan Rang Air Base, Vietnam
on June 7, 1969. He was 22 years old.
The mural hangs in the AFRS entryway, not as
a reminder of the circumstances of his death, but
how he lived his life. By accounts from those who
knew him in high school, Loftis loved life and always
strived to inspire and lift the morale of those
around him. According to one remembrance website,
"Joel was one of the most humble and talented
people I have ever met. However, it was more
than just talent. He was special. He always had a
smile on his face."
