Lt. Col. Diann Read adds character to "Pony Pals," keeping Olga Cardenas' third-grade class spellbound. In recognition of the 10th anniversary of the National Education Association's Read Across America Day on March 2, students at Sun Valley Elementary School were treated to volunteer readers in their classrooms. Colonel Read, who has authored a science-fiction trilogy under her maiden name, Diann Thornley, is assigned to the Air Intelligence Agency. Approximately 100 volunteers signed up to read to the students throughout the school day, with members of Team Lackland representing nearly 80 percent of the volunteers, according to Kelli Wilson, the school's social worker who also organized the event. Read Across America Day is currently the nation's largest reading event in which educators and community members encourage children to read, which simultaneously improves other basic skills. April 12 will be Drop Everything and Read Day. (USAF photo by April Blumer)
