Operation Northern Cactus is a joint training exercise that takes members of the 149th Fighter Wing, headquartered at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas, to an austere environment to participate in a simulated deployment exercise.
Members of the 149th FW took part in the joint training exercise at the Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center in northeastern Michigan recently. The Alpena CRTC boasts the largest airspace east of the Mississippi and has 147,000 acres available for ground maneuver units.
