Naval Research Enterprise Internship Program interns present research at NAMRU San Antonio

JOINT BASE SAN ANTONO-FORT SAM HOUSTON – (July 13, 2023) – University of Texas at Austin junior Saeha Lee, of Dallas, an intern assigned to Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU) San Antonio, participated in the Office of Naval Research’s Naval Research Enterprise Internship Program (NREIP) at the Battlefield Health and Trauma Research Institute. NREIP places college and university students in the Department of the Navy laboratories where they take part in real Naval research for ten weeks during the summer. NREIP gives academically talented college students, graduating seniors, and graduate students pursuing STEM careers the opportunity to learn about Naval research and technology while receiving first-class mentoring by top scientists and engineers. NAMRU San Antonio is one of the leading research and development laboratories for the U.S. Navy under the Department of Defense (DoD) and is one of eight subordinate research commands in the global network of laboratories operating under the Naval Medical Research Command in Silver Spring, Md.  Its mission is to conduct gap driven combat casualty care, craniofacial, and directed energy research to improve survival, operational readiness, and safety of DoD personnel engaged in routine and expeditionary operations. Drew Havard, deputy director, Craniofacial Health and Restorative Medicine (CHRM), Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU) San Antonio, joined by NAMRU San Antonio leaders, and Capt. William Deniston, commander, Naval Medical Research Command (NMRC), briefs Capt. Robert Hawkins, director, J3/5/7, Defense Health Agency (DHA) and director, U.S. Navy Nurse Corps, on a NAMRU San Antono-invented trachea device during a tour of NAMRU San Antonio facilities at the Battlefield Health and Trauma Research Institute. NAMRU San Antonio welcomes new commanding officer

JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-FORT SAM HOUSTON – (Aug. 4, 2023) – Capt. Gerald DeLong, Medical Service Corps (MSC), of Belvidere, Ill., former commanding officer of Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU) San Antonio, is “Piped Ashore” at the conclusion of a Change of Command Ceremony held at the Fort Sam Houston Theatre. Commanding NAMRU San Antonio since May 2021, DeLong took command during the COVID-19 pandemic with limited and or suspended research projects with less than 50 percent facilities occupancy for unit personnel.  DeLong led the command out of the pandemic and into full operations while regaining the confidence of research sponsors. NAMRU San Antonio’s mission is to conduct gap driven combat casualty care, craniofacial, and directed energy research to improve survival, operational readiness, and safety of Department of Defense (DoD) personnel engaged in routine and expeditionary operations.
