Community invited to open homes to Airmen for holidays

San Antonio area families can express their warmth and hospitality to Airmen and trainees at Lackland AFB by allowing them an opportunity to enjoy a holiday meal and family atmosphere through "Operation Homecooking."

In its 32nd year, the program provides the opportunity for families to share their traditional Thanksgiving celebrations with Air Force Airmen and basic trainees.
Throughout the years, families have generously opened their homes to these young men and women, recognizing that many of them are away from home for the first time.

Last year, local residents hosted 2,185 Air Force members for Thanksgiving dinner.

Families within a 30-mile radius of Lackland may invite two Airmen or trainees by calling 671-5453, 671-5454 or 671-3701. Calls will be taken weekdays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., beginning Nov. 1. This will be the fifth year trainees can also be requested via the web at http://www.lackland.af.mil/homecook

Area residents and out-of-town relatives who have trainees in basic training may request them by name for Thanksgiving. Since trainees are not permitted to have personal transportation during training, hosts must pick them up at the Basic Military Training (BMT) Reception Center (Bldg. 7246) between 8 and 11 a.m. Thanksgiving Day.

All Airmen and basic trainees must be returned to the base by 8 p.m.
