Sunday deadline to sign up for parent, child group fitness classes

Sunday is the last day to sign up for parent and child group fitness classes at the Rambler Fitness Center.

Parents and children who are looking for a fun, healthy activity to do this summer can sign up to participate in up to four fitness classes: step aerobics, yoga, cycling and kickboxing.

Children under 16 are typically not allowed to participate in the classes, but through the program, those between the ages of 11-15 can participate alongside their parent.

"These classes are great for parents looking to spend some quality time with their children this summer," said Marlon Richardson, Rambler Fitness Center fitness and sports director. "It's a fun activity for them to participate in together."

Participants can even take part in an orientation July 10 at 11:30 to get a feel for the equipment they'll be using during the classes.

Classes begin July 13 and times are:
Step aerobics - 9 a.m.
Yoga - 4 p.m.
Cycling - 5:15 p.m.
Kickboxing - 6 p.m.

Instructors will be able to assess each child's strength, cardio and flexibility level and help them increase them over time.

"These classes will provide a foundation to those children who have little knowledge of fitness," Mr. Richardson said. "It can also supplement the fitness programs offered at their school."

But public school students aren't the only ones who can benefit.

"It's a good program for those homeschoolers who don't have a structured physical fitness program," said Mr. Richardson. "Both child and parent can learn some of the basics needed to maintain a proper fitness level."

The program is beneficial to those parents who stay home with their children during the summer, he said, but it also opens a door to those parents "on-the-go."

"This is a great opportunity for parents to still get their workout in after they get off work," said Mr. Richardson. "They can swing by, pick up their child, workout together and keep up the pace of their daily lives."
