By Kenny Pruitt Air Force Personnel Center

Local students from Judson Early College Academy and Woodlake Hills Middle School walked away with a trophy and individual medallions after winning the second annual African-American Heritage Knowledge Bowl at Randolph High School here, Feb. 6.

Sponsored by Team Randolph's African-American Heritage Committee, more than 35 students competed in the quiz show style event with the purpose to educate and challenge youth on the diverse culture of American history with an African-American perspective. The students' knowledge was tested during two rounds of 25 questions.

"It's not just us as children learning about African-American History, but the American people as a whole learning about the history of this world," said Willie Davis, a participant from Woodlake Hills Middle School.

All middle and high schools from the Schertz, Cibolo, Judson and San Antonio Independent School Districts as well as schools from Fort Sam Houston and Lackland Air Force Base were invited to compete. Woodlake Hills Middle School, which also won in 2009, and Metzger Middle School competed in the middle school division. Judson Early College Academy, Judson High School and Wagner High School competed in the high school division.

Judges for the event were Maj. Gen. K.C. McClain, commander of the Air Force Personnel Center, and Maj. William Collins, chairman of the African American Heritage Committee.

"It was an honor to share in this important educational opportunity," said General McClain. "The knowledge of all the participants was amazing and I am extremely proud of every single student."

In addition to the winning trophy and medallions, participants also received a certificate of participation, goody bags from Northeast Lake View College and prizes from Air Force recruiters.
