LACKLAND AIR FORCE BASE, Texas –
Joint Base San Antonio security forces squadrons will recognize local law enforcement as National Police Week activities get underway May 16.
Activities for the week are sponsored by three Lackland units - the 802nd Security Forces Squadron, the 342nd Training Squadron and the 343rd TRS - and the 902nd SFS at Randolph Air Force Base. Events begin May 16 with a 5K run and luncheon, and continue each day through May 21.
A joint resolution of Congress in 1962 established May 15 each year as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which it falls as National Police Week. The legislation recognizes the service and sacrifice of federal, state and local law enforcement agencies, and National Police Week pays special tribute to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.
Senior Airman Caleb Greeling, 802nd SFS community policing/police services, said the San Antonio Police Department and the Bexar County sheriff's office works with JBSA security forces to provide a safe environment in and around the installations.
"It's important to have a good working relationship with those agencies," Airman Greeling said. "What happens right outside Lackland affects what happens on base. It's a joint effort (between security forces and local law enforcement) in that common (safety) goal."
Law enforcement teams from SAPD, the sheriff's office, Fort Sam Houston, Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Transportation Security Administration along with Lackland and Randolph are expected to participate in the week-long competitions.
The week's activities kick off at 7 a.m. May 16 with a 5K memorial run at the Lackland Outdoor Adventure Center. The run is followed by a noon luncheon hosted by the 902nd SFS at the Kendrick Enlisted Club on Randolph. Ron Echols, Live Oak police, is the guest speaker.
Other scheduled events for the week include a 25-pound team ruck march at Camp Bullis, a 4-person scramble at Gateway Hills golf course, a two-day K-9 competition, and an excellence in competition pistol match.
Airman Greeling said up to 136 spots are available for the golf tournament, and more than 150 civilian and military law enforcement members are expected for each competition event.
