Ramblers win first game of season during Ranger Jam tournament

By Robert Goetz Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph Public Affairs

The Randolph Ramblers basketball team broke through for its first win of the 2011-12 season last weekend at the Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston Ranger Jam tournament, but failed to successfully defend last year's title.

The Ramblers, winners of the 2011 Ranger Jam, lost two of three games in this year's tournament, falling 66-61 to the student JBSA-Fort Sam Houston team and 104-76 to the Fort Sam Houston Rangers. Both games were played Jan. 28.

Randolph rebounded to beat Gary Job Corps Center 100-70 the next day to finish third in the four-team round-robin tournament.

The Ramblers fell behind early to the student team, trailing 32-23 at halftime. They closed the gap to three points with less than two minutes remaining in the game, but their rally fell short.

Marqus Armour, the Ramblers' leading scorer throughout the tournament, scored 20 points and grabbed 15 rebounds, while Nick Reese contributed 15 points and eight assists and Martello Beverly added 11 points and eight rebounds.

In the Ramblers' contest against JBSA-Fort Sam Houston, Armour had 23 points and 10 rebounds. Also in double figures were Xavier James with 12 points, Reese with 11 points and Beverly with 10 points.
Coach Larus Martin said the Ramblers turned in their best performance of the season in dominating Gary Job Corps Center.

"We defended well, and we consistently scored in our half-court set and on the fast break," he said. "We were able to play our style of basketball and controlled the pace throughout the game."

Armour, Jeremy Scott and James combined for 75 points in the victory. Armour had 28 points and 18 rebounds, Scott scored 27 points and James contributed 20 points. Reese also was in double figures with 14 points.

"Hopefully we can carry the momentum of this victory over to this weekend's game," Martin said, when Huston-Tillotson University visits the Rambler Fitness Center gymnasium.

The game, originally scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, may be moved to Sunday, he said.
