JBSA observes Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

By Tech. Sgt. Remington Aalbers Robert D. Gaylor NCO Academy

Joint Base San Antonio is observing Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, or AAPIHM, which continues through May 31.

This observance celebrates the service and sacrifices of Asian/Pacific Islanders throughout the United States. Examples of their service and sacrifices highlighting World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and Iraq can be viewed at

Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives in June 1978. This joint resolution was passed by the House and Senate and later signed by the president on Oct. 5, 1978. This law directed the president to declare a seven-day period, beginning May 4, 1979, as “Asian/Pacific American Heritage Week.” The week was redesignated as the full month of May in 1992.

The Federal Asian Pacific American Council, or FAPAC, designated 2024’s theme as “Advancing Leaders Through Innovation” in hopes of highlighting the visionaries who have shaped and influenced AAPI history and continue to shape the future.
