For Memorial Day, be safe!

By Johnny L. Smith JBSA-Randolph occupational safety manager

Hello Joint Base San Antonio team,

I’m here to remind you to stay safe as we start our critical days of summer with the upcoming Memorial Day weekend. Let’s plan ahead to make sure our weekend is both fun and safe. Safety doesn’t happen by accident.

Remember to think risk management this holiday weekend while you’re away from work. If you don’t think it’s safe, then it probably isn’t and you need to stop, reevaluate the task, ask for help or take a break.

Risk management has principles. Those principles are: accept no unnecessary risk, make decisions at the appropriate level, and integrate risk management into your planning. If you apply risk management in your off-duty activities as well as you do at work, you’ll be sure to make it back to accomplish our mission, safe and sound.

Don’t drink and drive, arrive alive! We all know what happens when someone drinks too much. We become risk takers; so don’t let your wingman, shipmate, devil dog or battle buddy down. Call them or have a designated driver at your Memorial Day event!

Manage risk, it’s the new way of life!
