Navy Recruiting District San Antonio welcomes new commanding officer

Cmdr. Karen Muntean, former commanding officer of Navy Recruiting District San Antonio, was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal by Capt. Jason Webb, commodore, Navy Recruiting Region West, during a change of command ceremony held at the Luella Bennack Music Center on the campus of the University of the Incarnate Word Aug. 4.

NRD San Antonio Sailor selected for Health Services Collegiate Program

Petty Officer 1st Class Narce Segovia (left) enlisted in the Navy's Health Services Collegiate Program to receive a masters of healthcare administration from Texas State University. After graduation in 2019, Segovia will receive her commission and attend the five-week Officer Development School in Newport, R.I.  Administrating the Oath of Enlistment was Cmdr. Navy Recruiting District San Antonio assists educators orientation visit in San Diego

Educators from South Texas on the flight deck of the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) during Navy Recruiting District San Antonio’s annual Educators Orientation Visit, or EOV.  The EOV is a Navy Recruiting Command program with a main focus of showing educators the various facets of the Navy and the many career paths available to students. The group visited Naval Base San Diego, Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron THREE FIVE (HSM-35), BUD/S (Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL) Training at Naval Amphibious Base Coronado, the Pacific Beacon Navy Billeting, the Fleet Readiness Center, Coastal Riverine Group ONE, and the Navy Exchange.

SeaPerch a huge hit at University of the Incarnate Word STEM Camp

SeaPerch is an innovative underwater robotics program that equips teachers and students with the resources they need to build an underwater ROV in an in-school or out-of-school setting.

Navy mom follows son into Naval Service

San Antonio native and future Sailor, Minnie Rodriguez, stands with her son, Navy Reservist Hospital Corpsman Seaman Robert Rodriguez Jr.  Minnie, a college readiness coordinator with Southside High School, joined the Navy Reserve one year after her son enlisted.  She is currently in the Delayed Entry Program (DEP) and will leave for basic training in Great Lakes, Mich., on May 22 with follow-on training as an equipment operator.

Texas Governor delivers proclamation, swears in future San Antonio Sailors during Austin Navy Week

Texas Governor Greg Abbott delivers a proclamation to Navy Vice Chief of Information Rear Adm. Robert Durand after administrating the Oath of Enlistment to 10 future Sailors of Navy Recruiting District San Antonio at the governor’s mansion during Navy Week. Texas’s capital is hosting members of the U.S. Navy during Austin Navy Week, March 18-24, coinciding with Rodeo Austin and Stock Show. Austin Navy Week is the second of 15 Navy Weeks in 2017 which focus a variety of assets, equipment, and personnel on a single city for a weeklong series of engagements designed to bring America's Navy closer to the people it protects.

Navy hosts Regional SeaPerch Underwater Robotics Challenge in San Antonio

Petty Officer 1st Class Adam Bailey, a recruiter with Navy Recruiting Station New Braunfels, judges one of 26 robotics teams during the U.S. Navy’s Regional SeaPerch Underwater Robotics Challenge Competition.  U.S. Navy Recruiting Command (NRC) Southwest Region City Outreach Program in cooperation with Northeast Lakeview College and Navy Recruiting District (NRD) San Antonio hosted the competition at Palo Alto College’s Aquatic and Athletic Center Feb. 25.  The competition was comprised of three evolutions consisting of a Poster/Notebook Presentation and Interview, Speed Obstacle Course and the Challenge Course.

Navy Recruiting District San Antonio recognized for retention excellence

Petty Officer 1st Class Eric Petdan, command career counselor assigned to Navy Recruiting District San Antonio, stands next to one of two gold anchors situated in front of the NRD headquarters.  Originally black, the anchors were painted gold in 2014 after the command was recognized as one of the winners of the Navy’s Manpower, Personnel, Training and Education (MPT&E) Retention Excellence Award for Fiscal Year 2013.  The NRD was again awarded the honors for Fiscal Years 2015 and 2016.

Service to country runs in Fisher family

Reginal A. Fisher Jr. (left) , a 2016 graduate of Allison Steele High School in Cibolo, Texas, enlisted into the U.S. Navy as a hospital corpsman at the San Antonio Military Entrance Processing Station at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston.  His father, Lt. Reginal A. Fisher Sr., a native of Longview, Texas, and the enlisted operations officer for Navy Recruiting District San Antonio, administered the Oath of Enlistment.  Future Sailor Fisher will become the fifth generation serviceman in his family.  His great-great grandfather, Pfc. Tinzer Morrow, served in the Army during WWI; his great grandfather, Cpl. Willie Lee Fisher, served in the Army Air Corps in WWII; his grandfather, Cpl. James Lewis Fisher, served in the Army during the Vietnam War; and his father, who served in OPERATION IQAQI FREEDOM/ENDURRING FREEDOM.

Recruiters, future Sailors, donate time to San Antonio Food Bank

Cesar Lozano, a future Sailor in the Navy Delayed Entry Program, or DEP, volunteers at the San Antonio Food Bank.  Lozano, a 2014 graduate of Veterans Memorial High School in Brownsville, participated in the bi-weekly DEP meeting hosted by Navy Recruiting Station Northeast San Antonio.  The purpose of the volunteerism was to instill the “Whole Sailor Concept”.  Lozano will attend recruit training in Great Lakes, Mich. in April with follow-on training as an aviation structural mechanic.

Recruiting America's best and brightest into naval service is not the only mission for recruiters of NRD San Antonio, but also giving back to the community in which they recruit. Navy Recruiting District San Antonio honors World War II Navy pilot for 100th birthday

In celebration of his 100th birthday, Naval Aviator, Cmdr. Jeffrey Reynolds, executive officer, Navy Recruiting District San Antonio, presented a USS SAN ANTONIO (LPD-17) command ball cap to WWII Naval Aviator, Lt. Glen Shean during an Alamo Honor Flight Breakfast held at Denny’s, Nov. 7.   Shean, a Boerne resident and native of Cordell, Okla., served in the Navy as a TBF Avenger pilot from May 7, 1942 thru Oct. 1, 1946 aboard the USS Card (CVE-11), a Bogue-class escort aircraft carrier.

Navy recruiters pique interests of students during STEM Expo

Harlem, N.Y. native, Petty Officer 1st Class Daniel Jimenez, a recruiter assigned to Navy Recruiting Station Ingram, Navy Recruiting District San Antonio, instructs middle school girls on the Penny Boat Challenge during the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce's CORE4 STEM Expo held at the Freeman Expo Hall.  Jimenez is a 1999 graduate of A. Philip Randolph High School in New York.  The expo, consisting an all-female day and all-male day, featured leaders from the energy, science, computer, and aerospace industries and presented students with the opportunity to meet with high-profile representatives from Fortune 500 companies and governmental agencies.  Students experienced hands-on and demonstration projects, listened to speakers from exciting Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields, and spoke with Navy recruiters to discuss degree plans in interested fields and financial aid options.
