Brig. Gen. George N. Appenzeller, Brooke Army Medical Center commanding general; Command Sgt. Major Thomas Oates, BAMC command sergeant major; and Sgt. Major James Brown, chief clinical sergeant major, serve lunch to BAMC staff, patients and family members during the Operation BBQ Relief event at Brooke Army Medical Center at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston May 20. Volunteers provided 8,000 meals during the event.

JBSA firefighters show appreciation for wounded warriors

Joint Base San Antonio firefighters spent the morning with wounded service members at the Center for the Intrepid at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston participating in physical fitness and sports activities May 10. This is the ninth year the firefighters have organized the annual event to show their appreciation for the service and sacrifices the military members have made to our nation. After the sporting events, the firefighters prepared a barbecue lunch for the warriors and CFI
staff.

A myoelectric-controlled prosthesis is an externally powered artificial limb that the user controls with electrical signals generated naturally with his own muscles.

The Spurs also toured the state-of-the-art CFI rehab facility before the game. The CFI provides rehabilitation for military members who have sustained amputation, burns or functional limb loss.

Colbath is one of eight people who were brought to Brooke Army Medical Center with multiple gunshot wounds inflicted by a lone gunman in Sutherland Springs, Texas on Nov. 5, 2017. He is currently rehabilitating from his injuries at the CFI.

Veterans not forgotten during the holidays

Five hundred packages were delivered to the San Antonio Military Medical Center and Center for the Intrepid, 200 packages went to the Audie L. Murphy Veteran Affairs Hospital, 200 to the Army Residence Community, 200 to the Wounded Warrior Project, and the remaining 100 went to the Join Base San Antonio-Lackland Fisher House.

Army North unit leaders expand awareness of Center for the Intrepid

Leaders from Headquarters, Headquarters Battalion, U.S. Army North (Fifth Army) toured the Center for the Intrepid facility at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston Aug. 10 to learn about the importance of support and care provided to wounded warriors. The facility’s capabilities include state-of-the-art technologies designed to be used for rehabilitation, research, education and training. CFI maintains the military’s readiness by providing care, treatment and training to assist service members with rehabilitation to maximize their potential and reintegrate them back to the force.

It’s a new day: young mother survives car crash, gains new perspective on care

Jeanette and Daryl Naschke play with their boys, 5-year-old Austin and 3-year-old Nolan, in the park. Jeanette Naschke was severely injured in a car accident in May 2015 and received care at Brooke Army Medical Center and the Center for the Intrepid at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston. She is now able to enjoy her life with her family.

Unique rehab center at JBSA-Fort Sam Houston gets injured military back on duty

Lennis Lebarge as he rehabs his right knee with the Delfi machines BFR tourniquet at the Center for the Intrepid, or CFI, at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston Sept. 13. The BFR tourniquet reduces blood flowing from the specific body part and expedites the healing process. Strube currently serves military service members as the CFI physical therapist in charge of the Return to Run program.
