New year, new traffic laws on base

Base Traffic Safety Working Group

The new year has brought some changes in traffic patterns and speed limits on Lackland Air Force Base and Kelly USA.

The speed limit for 36th Street on Kelly USA, the street that runs parallel to the Kelly Field Annex, has changed from 30 to 40 mph.

Motorist should drive defensively since the new legal speed limit will reduce reaction time for maneuvering, such as pulling into traffic or braking. Also, with no center turn lane on this street, drivers may pull out and stop in oncoming traffic.

Due to traffic congestion and some related mishaps, as of Jan. 12 the intersection of Bergquist Drive and Wilford Hall Loop became a three-way stop.

The stop signs are on each side of the lanes going outbound. In this three-way stop, inbound traffic has the right-of-way, similar to the intersection of Kenly and Selfridge Avenues.
