Lackland ISD gets new board members

By April Blumer 37th Training Wing Public Affairs Office

Two new members of the Lackland Independent School District Board of Trustees were sworn into office Feb. 23 in the LISD administrative building.

Capt. Angel Betancourt and Tech. Sgt. Luis Rivera were recently selected by the Texas State Board of Education to serve on the school board.

Sergeant Rivera, an instructor in the 343rd Training Squadron, said this is his first experience being involved with public school functions on such a high level.

"It's a big responsibility. School board members approve and disapprove budgets, functions, events. It affects a lot of people, from parents and students to (the paid and volunteer staff)," he said. "I hope my ideas will help benefit the entire district, not just a certain population."

Captain Betancourt said he is "honored to serve as a board member and to collaborate with students, parent, teachers, administrators and board members to continue providing the best education to our military children."

The captain is the chief of military equal opportunity at the 37th Training Wing.

Those applying for the positions must be nominated by the installation commander. Eight packages were submitted for Brig. Gen. Darrell Jones' consideration. Gen. Jones is the commander of the 37th Training Wing.

Applications are then sent to the Texas State Board of Education for final selection and approval, with the top applicants being assigned a two-year term.

"I thought the process itself was simple," said Sergeant Rivera. "I had to submit my resume then answer some questions in an interview. Getting the state approval, that's a big deal."

According to the LISD Web site, http://lackland.tx.schoolwebpages.com, the board is composed of three civilian and two military members who operate under the philosophy that "all students learn in an environment where the dignity, worth and uniqueness of each student is continuously recognized."

The LISD school board meets in regular session on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. in the LISD board room, 2460 Kenly Ave., Bldg. 8265.

Agendas for meetings are posted 72 hours in advance at the LISD Administration Building.
