Asian Pacific American Heritage Month celebrates diversity

Randolph celebrates the diversity of its community by commemorating Asian Pacific American Heritage Month during May.

This year's theme "Pursuing Excellence through Leadership, Diversity, and Unity" allows us to pay tribute to those Americans of Asian/Pacific heritage whose pursuit of excellence has strengthened our nation.

Throughout the month, several events are planned for the base.

A Hawaiian Luau was held on May 3 at the officers'club. The event included an all-you-can-eat buffet, traditional Hawaiian dance performances and door prizes.

A 5K fun-run and one-mile walk takes place May 16 at 7 a.m. at Eberle Park. Prizes will be awarded to the top male and female finishers.

The elementary school will be making posters for a heritage art contest May 14-21, with prizes being awarded in three categories. The event is open for all children in pre-kindergarten through 5th grade of all Randolph Department of Defense cardholders, regardless if their children attend a Randolph school. Completed posters can be dropped off at the base library.

The observance concludes with the Asian-Pacific Festival May 24 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the 12th Logistic Readiness Division, Hangar 73. The festival will include free sampling of different ethnic foods such as Chinese, Korean, Thai, Japanese, Indian, Filipino. The event will also showcase authentic attire and displays, as well as, dance performances and demonstrations such as Filipino Tinikling dance and Korean Martial Arts.

For more information on the events, call 2nd Lt. Elizabeth Baker at 652-5181 or Tech Sgt. Myrla Kiluk at 565-2265.
