859 Surgery operates on Hitmen

By Tony Perez 37th Training Wing Public Affairs Office

The 859th Surgical Operations Squadron operated July 17 as if it was business as usual, beating the Cryptologic Systems Group, "The Hitmen," 6-1 in the first round of the double-elimination Intramural Softball Base Championship.

"It was a pretty good win," said, 859th Surgery pitcher Mark Muna. "We came out of a division in which half the teams forfeited. We were off for three weeks, so to come out here and play that well was a great feeling."

859th Surgery first got on the scoreboard in the second inning when center fielder Rick Savledo scored, followed by first baseman Sam Garcia.

Savledo would score again in the fourth inning on an error by "Hitmen" second baseman Jeff Bruce.

In the sixth inning, 859th Surgery shortstop Mike Jenkins hit a home run, bringing home second baseman Derrick Weese.

"He is one of our power hitters, so every time he comes up to the plate he's due for one," Muna said.

The outfield fence is 277 feet away from home plate. Muna also scored in the sixth inning.

Shortstop Mike Leonard scored the only run for the "Hitmen" in the seventh inning.

In the same inning, 859th Surgery right fielder Rob McGill made an incredible catch in foul territory, reaching over the fence and catching the ball with the tip of his glove to get the second out.
