LACKLAND AIR FORCE BASE, TEXAS –
The Stacey High School Eagles volleyball team opened district play at home Sept. 21 in convincing fashion, beating the Waelder High School Wildcats in four games.
The Eagles had trouble in the first game handling the Wildcats' serves and settling into a rhythm, and their rally came too late as they lost 17-25. Outside hitter Domini Davis had two kills in the game.
However, the Eagles were eager to gain some momentum and started the second game with two aces, delivered by middle blocker Ali Vargas.
This time it was the Eagles delivering unreturnable serves, as the team finished the game with eight aces. Davis had two more aces in this game along with setter Stephanie Glatt having two aces, while middle blocker Shana Holmes and opposite hitter Don'yelle Gibson had one each. The Eagles won the game 25-22.
The third match featured heated competition as the two teams exchanged leads for most of the game. Vargas earned three aces and a kill in a 25-22 victory.
Despite tough play from the Eagles, the Wildcats did not give up, forcing the Eagles into another close game. However, the Eagles' methodical play proved too much for the Wealder team, as they won the final game 25-22.
The game featured many returns, but the Wildcats could not find enough consistency to pull out a victory. Davis had one ace in the game, and Holmes had two aces.
The Eagles will continue district play at home Oct. 2 when they face Flatonia High School.
