Rambler 120 kicks off Saturday at Canyon Lake

By Thomas Warner Staff writer

The Third Annual Rambler 120 Team Challenge will kick off at 7 a.m. Saturday at Canyon Lake's Randolph Recreation Park.

Officials expect the triathlon-style competition that includes running, biking and rafting, plus a mystery event, to be both demanding and rewarding for the 49 teams registered for the event.

"I think we've got the best field ever and many of these people have already competed in the Rambler," said Steve Knechtel, event organizer. "Many of them will have competed in some kind of fitness event prior to this and I know they had a similar sort of competition at Laughlin Air Force Base earlier this year."

The Rambler originated in 2006, when then-12th Flying Training Wing commander Col. Richard Clark initiated the event. The colonel's departure has not lessened interest in the challenge, which features four- and six-person teams from four different air force bases, including 13 teams from cross-town Lackland AFB.

"Everything is coming together - even the weather report looks good," Mr. Knechtel said. "It looks as if it is going to be a beautiful day. The forecast is sunny, high in 80s low in 60s. We couldn't ask for a better Rambler 120 day than that."

Mr. Knechtel and other organizers will arrive at Canyon Lake ahead of competitors Friday to pick up rafts, put signs out and take care of last-minute items. Volunteers will show up Saturday morning around 5:30 a.m.

Canyon Lake is located in Comal County and can be accessed off multiple main roads leaving San Antonio, including Interstate 35 North and State Hwy. 281.
