AF boxers win gold, silver at Armed Forces

By Patrick Desmond 37th Training Wing Public Affairs

Of the four Airmen competing in the 2009 Armed Forces Boxing Championship at Fort Huachaca, Ariz., from April 28 to May 1, two returned to Lackland with medals around their necks.

His second time competing at the Armed Forces Championship, Air Force middleweight Joshua Gomez completed the goal he had set since winning silver last year.

In his championship bout May 1, Gomez, Kirtland AFB, N.M., outpointed Army boxer Reyes Marquez, Fort Myer, Va., for gold in the 152-pound weight class.

In his first trip, light heavyweight Nicholas Alwan, Pope AFB, N.C., took silver after being stopped by Army's Jeffery Spencer, Fort Carson, Colo.

Gomez outpointed Seaman Troy Browning during his first fight of the competition, April 28.

Army took first in the team award with seven total gold medals, followed by the Marine, Navy and Air Force teams.
