A&FRF program offers counseling services, support for military families

By Mariah Kilbourne 12th Flying Training Wing Public Affairs

The Department of Defense recently established a free Military and Family Life Consultant program that provides non-medical, short term, situational problem solving counseling services to all military personnel and their families.

According to the MFLC pamphlet, "the increase of deployments have heightened the stress placed on military families struggling with issues including single parenting, financial stability, frequent relocations and more." The counseling program provides support to address those issues.

Masters-or-PhD level licensed clinical counselors provide MFLC services to all branches of the military. Families, individuals, couples or children may receive non-medical counseling services in the areas of life skills and military lifestyle.

The life skills area focuses on topics such as anger management, conflict resolution, communication, parenting, decision-making skills and productivity at work.

The military lifestyle area addresses deployment stress, reintegration issues, relocation adjustment, separation, coping skills, homesickness, loss and grief.

According to the MLFC pamphlet, the program works with existing military family support programs to complement services provided and to "address relationships, stress management, grief after loss, occupational issues and provide crisis intervention when needed."

MLFC counselors are mandated to report child abuse and domestic abuse, otherwise the services are private and confidential.

"One of the benefits is the program's anonymity," MSgt. Todd Remington, Randolph Airman and Family Readiness Center noncommissioned officer in charge, said. "Many times individuals do not seek counseling because they worry about negative impacts on their career or security clearance. The anonymity of the program lessens those worries."
MLFC counseling provides on-demand, rotational services. The flexible services can be provided on or off military installations.
