The Landings at Randolph celebrates official opening of community center with base leadership

By Robert Goetz 12th Flying Training Wing Public Affairs

The Landings at Randolph, the base's privatized family housing, marked the official opening of its new community center on New B Street with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Monday afternoon.

The event - which featured Col. Jacqueline Van Ovost, 12th Flying Training Wing commander; Col. Michael Frankel, 12th FTW vice commander; Col. Alan Lake, 12th Mission Support Group commander; and Chief Master Sgt. Max Grindstaff, 12th FTW command chief - showcased a facility that includes a multi-purpose room and kitchen for meetings, parties and other events and a fitness room for residents with an adjoining children's play area.

"The community center is for Airmen and their families," said Candy Lotridge, community director. "They can use it for baby showers, birthday parties and holiday parties and we'll have monthly events like the pumpkin decorating contest we had on Monday."

She said the community center is geared to base housing residents, but organizations at Randolph can use the multi-purpose room for meetings on a recurring basis.

The fitness room will soon feature treadmills and other exercise equipment, and the play area will allow residents using the fitness equipment to watch their children while they're working out.

Ms. Lotridge said cooking classes are among other events planned at the community center, and she said she's open to other suggestions.

"Right now we're mainly booking it for parties and for holiday get-togethers," she said.

Office hours are weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The facility can be used after hours and on weekends, but use of the multi-purpose room requires a reservation, she said.

The community center is part of Pinnacle Hunt Communities LLC's redevelopment of Randolph's historic housing stock, which includes the renovation of 242 homes and maintenance of 75 others. The demolition of 10 townhouse structures with 80 units on the northeast side of the base is also planned.

"We're at 397 units now, but that will go down to 317," Ms. Lotridge said. "Thirty to 40 units are now offline due to renovations."
