Stacey named one of area's top high schools

By Mike Joseph 37th Training Wing Public Affairs

Lackland's Stacey High School was recently named one of the top 10 public high schools in the Greater San Antonio area by the Children at Risk organization.

"We are excited and honored to receive this award," said Gail Horn, Stacey High School principal.

Children at Risk is a nonprofit organization that drives change for children through research, education and influencing public policy. It focuses on the well being of the whole child, tracks those indicators, and proactively drives change for children by educating legislators on the importance of improving each of the key indicators.

Through its research and advocacy programs, Children at Risk is a leader in understanding the health, safety and economic indicators impacting children, and educating public policy makers in their importance of improving the lives of children.

The organization evaluated 57 high schools in the Greater San Antonio area. Researchers used 14 measures of performance to evaluate how schools are preparing students for post-secondary success.

Included in the evaluation process were:

· the percentage of students achieving Texas Assessment and Knowledge Skills (TAKS) Texas success initiative standards in math, English language arts, social studies, and science;

· the percentage of ACT/SAT test takers;

· mean SAT and ACT test scores;

· enrollment in advanced courses;

· completion of the recommended high school program;

· participation in Advanced Placement exams;

· performance on AP exams' 4-year graduation rates; and

· English/language arts average class size.

Stacey earned recognized campus status for the 2008-2009 school year by the Texas Education Agency for its TAKS scores.
