Construction at Randolph CDC, annex means room for more children, enhanced parking and a street closure

By Sean Bowlin 502nd Air Base Wing Public Affairs OL-B

Construction at Randolph Air Force Base's Child Development Center and the CDC Annex means a permanent street closure near the CDC and the temporary loss of some parking spaces near the Annex.

However, when construction finishes, both facilities will be able to accept 103 more children for child day care, for a total of 295 child care openings.

"We have a waiting list of 160, so this will result in a reduction of about 75 percent of that," said Karen Rudolph, 902nd Force Support Squadron Airman and Family Services flight chief.

Antonio Matos, 902nd Civil Engineer Squadron project manager, is overseeing the construction at both facilities. He said four new activity rooms totaling 10,000 extra square feet will be added to the CDC, located at Building 1072.

"This will eliminate 'blind' spaces and add viewing windows so caregivers can watch the children and see what they're doing. It almost doubles the size of that building," Mr. Matos said.

The $2.4 million CDC project will also expand the facility's parking lot, giving it 30 more parking spaces, up from its present total of 18 spaces, he explained. That's the first phase of construction, with the actual CDC expansion being the second phase.

Due to construction, New "A" Street is permanently closed to traffic, but the CDC parking can be accessed from that street, in addition to the site of the old Military Clothing Store at Buillding 1071.

Peak hours for drop-off and pick up of children won't usually be affected by construction, said Mr. Matos.

"There may be some times when you won't have direct access to the CDC," Mr. Matos warned. "People may have to park on the periphery."

Mr. Matos explained he has no dates yet when that may occur, but presently, he's trying to arrange for parking lot work to be done on weekends, though he's received no confirmation from the contractor.

The 563rd Flying Training Squadron will lose 19 parking spaces until the $2.2 million CDC Annex project is finished in mid-November, Mr. Matos added. Like its sister CDC project, the design is ongoing and is on a fast-track to completion. The annex project entails the addition of four classrooms, a medical area, a laundry room and the demolishing of a metal building located there.

The design for the project, which started in December, is ongoing and the entire effort is due for completion in November.
