One Stop Shop: Facility consolidates 5 family services

By Mike Joseph 502nd Air Base Wing OL-A Public Affairs

The consolidation of five Lackland support functions to a "One Stop" location officially took place recently with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house attended by more than 400 invited guests and patrons.

One Stop, located in Bldg. 5460, located on the corner of Walker and Selfridge avenues, behind the 802nd Contracting Squadron, now houses the Airman's Attic, Cinderella's Closet, the Loan Locker, the Lackland Thrift Shop, and the Women, Infants and Children office.

"It was an MSG (802nd Mission Support Group) decision to consolidate these five base support functions, and it's definitely a customer service improvement," said Sharon Witter, chief of the Lackland Airman and Family Readiness Center.

Witter, who served on the project planning committee, said the event was a culmination of more than a year's worth of planning.

"They were in three different locations on base. Now everyone, customers and the support staff, benefit from this move," Witter said about co-locating the five support functions under one roof.

Staffed mainly by volunteers, services provided at the One Stop facility include:

Loan Locker - loans, on a short-term basis, essential living items for permanent change of station active-duty members who are arriving or leaving the base.

WIC - provides assistance with supplemental foods, healthcare referrals, nutrition education, and breastfeeding promotion to women, and infants and children.

Cinderella's Closet - loans gowns and cocktail dresses for special occasions to military ID cardholders.

Airman's Attic - donates free military uniforms and uniform accessories, clothing, furniture and household appliances to active-duty senior airmen and below.

Lackland Thrift Shop - sells donated and consigned items. Proceeds are donated to various military and community-based organizations.

The five support functions are independently sponsored by several organizations on base.

AFRC supports the Loan Locker and WIC programs, the Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland Top III oversees the Airman's Attic, the JBSA-Lackland Officers' Spouses' Club runs the Lackland Thrift Shop, and the JBSA-Lackland Enlisted Spouses' Club operates Cinderella's Closet.

Darlene Glover, co-manager of the Airman's Attic, said the consolidation to one building has been a positive move.

"We've got more room and more shelf space," Glover said. "And it's more open; people aren't stumbling over each other. Macy's helped with our uniform displays by donating circled clothes racks."

"It's unbelievable," said Linda Slater, a volunteer at Cinderella's Closet. "Our old loan closet was a tiny space in the Airman's Attic. Now we have a designated room and a dressing room."

Glover and Slater said both organizations have experienced increased customer traffic flow since moving to the One Stop location.
