Airman brings upbeat attitude, strong work ethic to 502nd CPTS

By Robert Goetz 502nd Air Base Wing Public Affairs

Joint Base San Antonio’s 502nd Comptroller Squadron is the largest unit of its kind in the Department of Defense, with nearly 130 military members and civilians providing customer service and accounting and budget functions at three JBSA locations.

An Airman at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland exemplifies the service and dedication of these squadron members who support 266 mission partners throughout JBSA.

Airman 1st Class Bridget Golden, 502nd CPTS cashier and paying agent, handles duties ranging from processing and collecting payments to giving finance briefings to JBSA-Lackland basic military trainees.

Golden said she processes payments for active-duty members who are having issues with their pay record and collects payments from individuals and organizations across eight different bases within Air Education and Training Command.

“An instance where we would process a collection would be if an individual had a debt they needed to pay back,” she said. “Another instance is when members pay for medical procedures. The organization that is being paid has to bring their vouchers with all of the payments over to us to be processed.”

Golden’s section is also responsible for printing and issuing EZ Pay cards to each trainee who comes through JBSA-Lackland.

“These cards allow trainees to purchase items they need for basic training – from notebooks and pens to shampoo and toothbrushes – because a trainee may come to BMT with nothing, and they need an option to be able to buy the necessities,” she said.

A favorite aspect of Golden’s job is the briefings she gives to trainees. These 30- to 45-minute briefings take place Wednesday-Friday.

“We brief the trainees on how to complete their direct deposit form so they can begin the process of being paid, and we also brief them on their entitlements as trainees and the differences between whether or not they have dependents,” she said.

The briefings include the issuance of EZ Pay cards, Golden said.
“We also answer any questions they have about finance,” she said.
Golden’s supervisor, Jason Tucker, 502nd CPTS deputy disbursing officer, said she brings a great attitude and strong work ethic to the squadron.

“Her strengths are an amazingly upbeat attitude that is very contagious, and she has the work ethic of someone who has been in the military for a lot longer than one year and seven months,” he said. “I’d be happy if the Air Force could clone her and I could have Airmen like her working for me for years to come.”
