Interstate 35 will be shut down this weekend so the Texas Department of Transportation can do some bridge work on New Braunfels Avenue.
A major I-35 road closure — the demolition of the New Braunfels Avenue bridge shutting down all north and south freeway traffic — will start Friday at 9 p.m. and last until Monday, Jan. 9 at 5:30 a.m.
The shutdown, which begins at 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, 2017, affects both lanes of the interstate. While drivers will be able to use the roadway, TxDOT officials said it will be congested.
As a detour, drivers can take the New Braunfels Avenue exit, go through the intersection and get back onto the interstate on the other side.
Workers will be on site over the weekend to repair damage to the bridge and complete some upgrades.
I-35 will reopen at 4:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon (Jan. 7), so people can get to the San Antonio Spurs basketball game that night. However, the lanes will be closed again at approximately midnight after giving people a chance to clear the area around the AT&T Center
